4th Year Thesis Project

“Identifying Design Strategies that can Improve Quality of Life and Wellbeing for Those Experiencing a Memory-Afflicted Disability in Aged Care Homes.” volume Volume One of this thesis was a research based study to identify which design elements most affected the wellbeing and quality of life in aged care homes, specifically for individuals who are struggling with a memory-afflicted disease. The six principles concluded to have the most affect on these aspects were materiality, biophilia, cognitive stimulation, accessibility to natural light, social interaction, and sensorial connectivity.

“Enhancing Quality Of Life In Dementia Care Through Creative Design Strategies.” volume Volume Two of this thesis included the active design phase. Here, I applied the six design principles to prototype designs before utilising all of them in two chosen spaces in a pre-existing location. The front lobby and lounge space, as well as the central courtyard and interior design space were chosen to integrate these ideas, and floorplans, spatial analysis diagrams, and renders were made to display these changes.

  • Beginning with personal significance related to my late grandmother and her struggle with Alzhiemer’s disease, I chose to study and understand spaces that could benefit those who live with various memory impairments, including dementia.

  • The six design principals were then applied to physical designs, analysing their benefits, and how they could be used in an existing aged care facility.

  • Finally, floorplans, diagrams, and renders were produced to visually communicate the final design proposal creations.
